This isn't a complete list, but here are some highlights from my gaming career.

I was the principal writer for the Deus Ex series, probably the best work I've done as a game writer. Released in 2000, Deus Ex won Game of the Year from over 35 publications, including PC Gamer. The sequel, Invisible War, likewise won many awards, including Best Story of 2003 from IGN and a nomination for Best Writing at the IGDA Developer's Choice Awards. In the fall of 2006, the original Deus Ex won a Gamasutra Quantum Leap Award for being the video game that has "advanced game storytelling in the largest way" since the birth of the medium. Some of the juicier excerpts from the game can be found in this radio interview, conducted in 2001 by Philippe Tapon. Copyright © Philippe Tapon and KFJC 2001. America's Army - Rise of a Soldier |
|
In 2004 and 2005, I had the great privilege of working with U.S. Special Forces soldiers for about nine months to learn what they do for a living and how to put that down into words. The feedback of writing workshops pales in comparison to listening to a group of soldiers guffaw as they read your dialogue aloud. I certainly learned more on this project than I did during any of my other writing gigs. Though Rise of a Soldier may not be the flashiest action game out there, it is blessed by smart design work by Secret Level, including the writing and overall story design done by the other half of the writing team, Taylor McDowell. Despite the massive number of enemy KIA, this game might well be the most honest simulation of the soldier's experience to date. |
